A server is a device or hardware which serves to the user. It could be a computer or any other device.

Still, confused about what is it? In simple words, it is a place where all your files, data and resources are stored and it can be accessed whenever required.

For example, we can store our data on any storage device or in our computer and we can access it anytime whenever we need it. Similarly, the server stores data on the network which can be accessed any time 24x7.

Various companies run data centres where servers are already made and have all the facilities, we just need to pay for using them and then we can remotely use the server for storing or retrieving the data.

Types of hosting

  1. Shared hosting – like an apartment.
  2. VPS(Virtual Private Servers) hosting – like a townhome.
  3. Dedicated servers – like your own house.
  4. Cloud hosting – virtual server (rather than a physical one) running in a cloud computing environment.

If you are new and don’t know how much visitors you will have, it’s good to start with shared hosting.

Why do we need to store our data on servers?

We don’t want any kind of interruption on our website when a user is visiting it, So, everything we need to run a website, like images, codes, resources, and other things are stored on a server and that is available 24x7 so that our website is always live.

Whenever anyone opens our website, it goes to the server and the server loads our files for the user.

To build one of your own, you might need a  24x7 power supply with  Internet connectivity and it’s not possible practically.

Since we can’t make our own server, there are so many companies providing this facility by hosting server. There are different kinds and types of servers, depending upon the need of a user. The company also charges some amount of money from the users.

It allows individuals and organizations to make their website accessible on the network. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server owned or leased for use by clients.
